Peter Khalil

Peter Khalil

Prior to joining CISS, Peter Khalil worked for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as his Foreign Policy/National Security adviser and as Senior International Adviser, Intelligence and Operations to the Minister for Defence. In these roles he provided foreign policy, defence and national security advice, including on Afghanistan, Iraq, East Timor, Solomon Islands, the US relationship and on other global deployments and operational issues.

Prior to these appointments, he was a New York-based political risk analyst and consultant, providing advice to clients in government, multinational corporations and Wall Street financial institutions. Peter has been a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC (2004/05) after earlier working in both the Departments of Defence and Foreign Affairs. From August 2003-May 2004 Peter was the Director of National Security Policy for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq and was awarded the Australian Overseas Humanitarian Services medal for his service.

Peter has testified before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee and published widely including op-ed pieces in the New York Times, the Australian, Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald, and made regular appearances on CNN, ABC and BBC.Peter has a Masters of International Laws from the Australian National University and a Bachelors of Law and Arts from Melbourne University.
